Laura Dern
From what GF has learned, Dern is a political/diplomat figure named Chancellor Valara, who is part of the Republic. She (obviously) was not present during the First Order’s attack on the Hosnian system as were several other Republic representatives. I’m told while the the Republic fleet was near completely destroyed and probably something like 85% of it’s key members killed, the Republic is still hanging on by the skin of it’s teeth.
Leia and some of her most trusted Resistance members will be part of a memorial early in the film where Leia is attacked (more info on that here). Before the attack occurs, Leia has words with Valara whom she apparently already knows quite well. Valara asks for added military force from the Resistance as the Republic is left more vulnerable than ever before. After the attack on Leia leaves Finn and other members of the resistance in pursuit of Leia’s would be assassin, Poe escorts Valara and a few other surviving Republic members to the Resistance’s new digs. It has been stated online previously that Valara takes over for Leia while she is in a comatose state. This is false. Poe leads the Resistance while Valara (with the help of BDT’s character as previously mentioned) instructs the remaining Republic military forces to work with the Resistance. General Flux tells me this will setup a Resistance/Republic vs. The First Order Space battle later in the film. Get hyped.
Benicio Del Toro
Much speculation about who Benicio Del Toro is playing in Episode VIII has ranged from a wolfman-type alien to a Knight of Ren. Well, those are all wrong. Del Toro is playing a high ranking Republic commander.
Del Toro has been referred to by what GF believes is a production codename, Commander “Tug”. Flux says that Tug is a “by-the-books” military type and compares him to General Patton. Tug is a Republic military vet who accepts the help of the Resistance at Valara’s request but seems to have some type of disdain for them. Laura Dern’s Chancellor Valara works hand-in-hand with Poe Dameron but Tug butts heads with Poe regardless of Valara’s orders. GF describes their relationship as similar to the Kylo and Hux rivalry and that Poe feels something is off about him.
Kelly Marie Tran
According to Flux, she was not on set very much at all. He thinks she has more screen time than Max von Sydow did in TFA but less than Oscar Isaac. She shared one scene with John Boyega where, as Flux describes, she gives Finn information on the First Order. They meet in a bar that is much fancier than the ones seen in previous films. Tran wears all a dark green (almost brown) jacket that matches her pants and a low cut black top that has some sort of purple pattern on it, belt, and boots.
Since I am talking Tran and Boyega I should state that there is no romance between the two. Her character, which is named Aya (but this may just be a filming code name, Flux isn’t sure), flirts with Finn when they meet but he doesn’t reciprocate. By what Flux describes I am making the assumption that she is an information broker to the highest bidder. How she gets her information is not revealed to Flux’s knowledge. At the end of the scene stormtroopers appear and begin shooting at Finn and she leads him out the back door to escape.
